Let’s be honest with each other: adulting sucks. When we’re young and don’t have a care in the world we want nothing more than to be all grown up. The frightening reality is by the time it hits us and there’s no going back, it’s too late.
But it’s not all doom and gloom! In fact, getting older can actually be quite nice. It certainly has its advantages. However, there are a few things that I wish I’d known growing up and may have been able to avoid. For all you mindful men out there, here are the biggest mistakes to avoid as you get older.
1. Not saving your money
Yes, yes, the thought of saving your money might sound terribly boring but the future you will thank you for it. The fact is, you don’t need to give up on the good things in life to save your money. Yes, you will need to work hard and be mindful of how you spend your money, however, even if you are only saving 5% of your monthly wages each month, it’s better than nothing at all.
Set your money aside and invest it as early as possible. If you really want to live the high life and have no worries, then you need freedom. Money can buy you that.
2. Not taking care of your body
Understand this: you can have a good time without pumping your body full of rubbish. We’re not going to sit here and tell you never to eat junk food, drink alcohol, or experiment with other things in life. However, you can still enjoy your youth and experiment plenty without being unkind to yourself. It’s all about finding the right balance! Get into the habit of exercising every day and eating well and you will live a much happier, healthier, and more successful life.
3. Neglecting your self-development
Just because you’ve left school and got a job it doesn’t mean that you have no more room to progress. If you want to take advantage of every opportunity there is out there, then you need to prepare yourself. So, binge watch your favourite TV shows and play your computer games, but make time for reading books as well. You must continue to progress, learn, and acquire new skills along the way. If you neglect your self-development your life will stagnate and you will only look back in regret.
4. Listening to what other people have to say
I appreciate the irony in telling you not to listen to what other people have to say whilst simultaneously telling you which mistakes to avoid, but bear with me. Yes, there are many people in life who will offer you sound advice, but that’s up to you to decide. You need to establish a certain level of independent and critical thinking. If it makes sense to you, take it on board, if not, don’t worry about it.
The point is, if you live your life listening to every single detail that other people have to say then you’ll leave no room for joy. Case and point: if you want to buy male sex toys in Australia but you know that your friends would take the mick out of you, then understand that you are missing out on your own self-pleasure and actualisation over something that nobody needs to know about.
Most men don’t bother to take hot baths because they think it’s “unmanly”, and yet it is so good for your health, both mentally and physically.
Ignore the “cultural norms” and what is expected of you. Lean into life and follow your heart mate!
